Introduction to Music Performance Papers

Each quarter you will write two papers based on musical performances you have attended.  Each paper is worth 50 points, for a total of 100 per quarter.  These papers should meet the following criteria:

1)     All papers must be typed.  Non-typed papers will lose points.

2)     Papers should be two pages in length.

3)     Margins will be 1 inch on all sides.  Font should be Times New Roman, Arial, or Bookman Old Style – 12 point.

4)     Grammar and Spelling will be graded.  Spell Check can be used, as well as dictionaries and other references. Ask if you need help.

5)     Performances must have been during the current school year.

6)     Performances must be held outside of school unless approved in advance.  For example, writing about the marching band at a school assembly does not count.  Writing about the marching band at a football game does count.

7)     Performances must be attended live and in person, not just watched on TV.

8)     Late papers will lose 5 points per class day.

Almost any live music counts as a performance – music at Sunday Mass, marching band, rock concert, etc.  Each type of performance can only be used once. For example, you can write about the Helias marching band at a football game, but then not at a parade.  You could, however, then write about the Helias Concert Band or another school’s marching band.

In your paper you will provide the following information:

1)     Who performed?

2)     When was the performance?

3)     Where was the performance?

4)     What instruments were used?

5)     What did you like and dislike?

6)     Would you recommend the performance to others?

Be as detailed as possible in your analysis of the performance.  Make sure that you pick a performance that can give you enough information to write two pages.  Someone singing The Star-Spangled Banner before a basketball game is probably not long enough, but the marching band half-time show would be plenty (if you actually pay attention, not talk to your friends and occasionally look at the field).
