Ludwig von Beethoven
(December 17, 1770 – March 26, 1827)
Ludwig von Beethoven, often referred to as the Father of the Romantic Era, died yesterday in Vienna. He was 56 years old.
Mr. Beethoven was a well-known and respected composer, able to compose despite the fact that he was completely deaf the last years of his life. Many of Mr. Beethoven’s greatest compositions, in fact, were written after he had lost his hearing. These pieces include Symphony No. 9 and Missa Solemnis.
As a child Beethoven was a prodigy, though he never achieved the kind of fame enjoyed by Mozart. As he progressed in his studies, held with numerous composers including Antonio Salieri, Franz Joseph Hayden, and Mozart himself, Beethoven began to develop a new style of musical writing. Though Beethoven was one of the early users of this “Romantic” Style of writing, the trend is beginning to catch on with other composers.
In the last years of his life, Mr. Beethoven enjoyed an unusual arrangement with the Viennese aristocracy – he was paid simply to live in Vienna. No compositions or commissions were required, just living in the city.
Mr. Beethoven composed numerous works of music during his career. Among the more prominent pieces are 9 symphonies, 16 String Quartets, the Missa Solemnis, and 4 Overtures.
His Father, Johann, and his mother preceded Mr. Beethoven in death. Mr. Beethoven never married and had no children. A Nephew, Karl von Beethoven, survives him.
A visitation service will be held Friday from 6–9 pm at the Royal Vienna Funeral Home. A Requiem Mass will be held Saturday at 11 am at the Vienna Cathedral.
