  March Madness

By Patrick Remis

March Madness is something that all of us in the world get to enjoy from the 19th of March all the way until the 6th of April. It is made up of 64 teams from across the United States that played their best basketball they could, to be able to reach this highly sought-after exciting tournament of upsets and great victories that will be remembered forever.

March Madness is a time for every person that loves sports, even people that have no clue about basketball, to enjoy the sport of basketball and understand why even the powerhouse teams can be beat by the small nobody schools that no one has ever heard of. But the most exciting part is filling out brackets and choosing which upsets will happen and finally deciding the final four.

This year has been pretty amazing in the Big East. They had seven teams enter into the tournament. That is the most any conference in college basketball has had in the NCAA tournament. They had six of the seven in the Sweet Sixteen which is the third round of the tournament. The Big 12 is the next conference that many of us are fans of because of the Missouri Tigers. They had an amazing turnaround season but ended their season loosing to Connecticut in the Elite 8.

The only upsets that have happened so far are number 13 seed Cleveland State defeating number 4 seed Wake forest. Also number 12 seed Western Kentucky defeating number 5 seed Illinois. Last but not least number 12 Wisconsin beating up on number 5 seed Florida State. Many would say these are big upsets, but what people don’t realize are many of these college teams don’t face the teams they lose too, and they may think it’s an upset because of the seed they may have received but really they are equal just not in the bigger conferences we all hear about.

The way things are looking in the brackets is that all the top 3 seeded teams in each division of their bracket have made it to the sweet sixteen so far. But I have a feeling as do many college basketball fans there could be an upset in the making. All of the number 1 seeds are still in and if they make it to the final four it would be only the second time that all the number 1 seeds made to the final four; the first time this happened was just last year when North Carolina, UCLA, Kansas, and Memphis were the final four. Kansas went on to win the National Championship that year.

The last weekend of the tournament ended up as a good one but was a shocker for many of the number one seeds. Michigan State who is a number two seed defeated the top ranked number one seed Louisville to make it to the final four. UConn defeated Missouri, Villanova upset Pittsburgh and the last game was UNC defeating Oklahoma to set up the final four which will take place this coming weekend.

I think this year’s tournament could end with some really exciting finishes. I hope that all of your brackets are doing well and that you stay tuned to all the great college basketball games!
