  Discover The Way

By Amber Iven

The 2007, biannual, National Catholic Youth Conference was a success.  More than 22,000 teens joined as one to celebrate God's love.  The inspirational, three-day conference was held in Columbus, Ohio from November 8 to November 10.  Steve Angrissano, a very talented musician and speaker, was the conference MC.  He led the group on their spiritual journey to "Discover The Way", the theme of this year's NCYC.

On Wednesday night, November 7, six buses from dioceses all around Missouri met at St. Joseph Cathedral.  From there, we began our ten hour trip to Columbus.  We arrived at the Aladdin Shrine the next day and were warmly welcomed.  The "warm-up" entertainers were Oddwalk Ministries and Sara Bauer.  After that, we settled in to our hotel rooms and then we were off again.  We bustled through the large crowd in and around the Nationwide Arena, where the major NCYC speakers spoke and where the attendees were all gathered together, for the opening acts of the weekend.  Musical performers on opening night were Righteous B - a Christian rap group - and a man named Caeli Rain and his band.

On day two, we returned to the Nationwide Arena, and Tony Melendez gave an inspirational performance.  He was born with no arms, plays the guitar with his feet, and was kissed by Pope John Paul II!

In a convention center building, all of the teens, chaperones, and priests could break out into smaller groups and attend smaller sessions led by renowned speakers and musicians.  Some of the speakers were Jason and Crystalina Everett, Jesse Manabusan, Pam Heil, and Judy McDonald, a hilarious comedian.  Musical groups and entertainers were Oddwalk Ministries, Over the Top Ministries, Popple, Apex Ministries, JC's Posse, DJ Bill, and Matt Maher.  Other arena speakers were Father Tony Ricard, Sara Hart, and Renee Bondi.  The entire experience was inspiring, overwhelming, and worth every minute.

If NCYC sounds as amazing as it was, then I encourage you to attend the next one.  NCYC 2009 will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, and I hope to see you there!
