  Knitted Rebellion

By Kylie Nolla

Worn upon the feet the socks multicolored
Poking out from beneath khaki pants and black-brown shoes
Like tiny calls of rebellion
Like small paths to freedom

They whisper to outside glances, "We shall overcome"
So those with socks of white turn their heads
Hearing the whispers, but moving on
Rarely carrying with them the message of the colored

The socks of bright are beacons
Even those in power notice
But they speak not against it, they press their lips together
They have things to do, other things to notice
They do not think such little whispers could cause an uproar

Those with color think so
Those with shirts unbuttoned
Belt loops vacant
Stitches from foreign brands
Though some do not think at all
Slipping on pinks or greens in the morning
Or simply following the words of the colored
Envying their brave indignation

The white-socked carry on, books to their chest
Some in fear of punishment,
Some with wisdom in their eyes,
Some deaf to the statements of socks.
