Juno Review

By Jacqui Joyce

When I first heard of this movie back in October I was excited and I knew it was going to be a big hit. At first glance I saw the cast list: Jason Bateman and Michael Cera who were on a TV show together called Arrested Development. I love that show, it has amazing writing and I can't believe it got cancelled. Then I got excited as I read more and more about this movie. Then I read about the writer Diablo Cody who isn't an ordinary screenplay writer, she was an exotic dancer turned blogger turned Hollywood's next amazing screenplay writer? Then I read a little about Ellen Page and she has been in some Canadian movies and created a little buzz in the United States. This by far is her breakout role into American movies.

The movie starts out with Juno (Ellen Page), a sixteen year old, that does not quite have everything figured out. She speaks as if she is in her own world and talks how she feels and is open and doesn't hide from other people. I love this about her character, not just the language but she speaks as is and does not worry about the people around her. The language in and of itself is unique and it captures how teenagers come up with slang and use it with whomever they are speaking with. Juno isn't an average high school girl. She isn't caught up in stupid things that don't really matter and is eccentric in every way. She ends up pregnant and explores all the options of pregnancy until she finds one that suits her.

This movie is a good representation of amazing writing and a good mix of actors and actresses. I loved everything about the movie starting from the beginning. It is no wonder to me that the rest of the U.S. fell in love with it also, because Juno was nominated for four Academy Awards. The humbleness of everyone involved still amazes me that being nominated didn't change much to them, they were just happy that people enjoyed what they made. On Sunday, Juno won for best original screenplay.

The movie wasn't the only thing that was great. The soundtrack for it was equally unbelievably good and one of the best soundtracks I have ever listened to. From the opening song "All I want is you" by Barry Louis Polestar to the ending song where Pauly Bleeker (Michael Cera) and Juno (Ellen Page) are singing "Anyone Else But You" by the Moldy Peaches, it is simply one of the cutest things I have ever seen.
