  Helias Homecoming Week 2007

By Krista Crider

Helias Homecoming Week 2007 was exciting for all involved. This year’s theme was, “Crusaders for all seasons.” And it began Sunday, October 21, with the girl’s Powderpuff and the boy’s Powderpuff games. The senior and sophomore girls were victorious on the football field and the junior and sophomore boys were successful on the volleyball court. After those games, the senior boys played the faculty and were yet again put in their place.

That night, float building began, and students of every age gathered at their building sites to try to “one-up” their competition. Also, the freshmen decorated the school in preparation for their spirit day on Monday. Their theme was summer, and an assortment of giant palm trees set them above many of the freshmen classes of the past. In the morning, they congregated outside the front of school in their summer attire and took part in their very first spirit day.

Tuesday, the sophomores took over and it was as if spring fever had struck the school.  Easter decorations and baseball attire were seen throughout the day, but sadly, their spirited efforts were not enough, and they were far from victory in the class spirit day competition.

The juniors’ theme was fall this year, and they outshone the freshmen and sophomores with their costumes, adornments, and festivities before school Wednesday. They ended up getting second overall, but that didn’t come as much of a surprise due to the extraordinary efforts of the seniors.

Coming to school Thursday was like walking into a winter wonderland. The seniors managed to summon snow sometime throughout the night Wednesday, and were sledding on it when the rest of school showed up for the snow-scheduled day. The snow schedule in itself was an accomplishment for the seniors because to their knowledge it had never been done before, without actual snow that is. Rumor has it, some of the senior girls had connections with the ice arena and Wednesday just so happened to be the day they piled the excess snow out back.

With the hill of snow and a giant igloo popping out of the front window of school, the seniors automatically had an advantage when it came to the decorations; the fifteen-foot Christmas tree in the center of the Commons was just icing on top of their very festive Christmas cake. Needless to say, the seniors won the spirit day contest by leaps and bounds with the help of their outstanding decorations, festive costumes, and intense before school jovialities.

Friday was the pep-assembly where the whole school united to celebrate homecoming and get ready for the game. The seniors ended up winning Penny Wars with the freshmen in second. The cheerleaders impressed onlookers with one of their competitive routines, and the dance team performed as well. That night, the class floats were put on display at the parade, and the freshmen ended up winning with their impressive tidal-wave beach scene.  The pep-assembly served as entertainment afterwards.

Saturday, the football team took charge and really did “Wipeout” the Mexico Bulldogs with a score of 41-14.

The dance Sunday capped off the already exhilarating events of the week. Overall, Homecoming 2007 carried on the great tradition Helias began fifty-two years ago.
