Young Life

As another school year comes and goes, it is important to notice organizations that remain constant, rocks of stability for Helias students. One such group is Young Life, known fondly as “the Club” by some members. Young Life is an organization that brings the Good News of Christ into the lives of adolescents. Founded in 1941, Young Life clubs are found in all four corners of the world in over fifty countries. As described by Young Life leader Dave Kemna, “Young Life is a safe environment for people to learn the Gospel.”

The Helias High School chapter of Young Life assembles weekly on Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. at the Knowles YMCA in Jefferson City. On a typical night the members of the club meet outside the YMCA. They sing or listen to music and watch skits usually performed by the club organizers. After that they play games, talk about God and life, and end with a prayer. These Wednesday nights add a bright spot to the students’ week and give them something to await eagerly.

However, Young Life does not repeat the same routine week after week. The club celebrates holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween, along with having many special events that members fervently anticipate. Such events include Muck fest, a giant food fight and one of the most popular phases of Young Life, and the Battles of the Sexes, which consists of random tasks to determine which gender is superior. The annual scavenger hunt, which occurs in early spring, is popular as well. Yet still more activities bring members closer to Christ, such as Young Life Camp, a weeklong camp that places special interest on prayer and fun. Young Life members can also attend “campaigning” meetings once a week to more deeply discuss their faith with other teenagers.

Students at Helias High School realize that life can continue monotonously if there is not a fun, pleasurable break in a long week at school. Truly, Young Life can provide that break and bring students closer to Christ, its most important mission of all.
